My article First Impressions: Cherokee Printing Type in the 1800s appears in the newsletter of the Cherokee National Historical Society, published through the Cherokee Heritage Center in Tahlequah, OK. You can download a PDF copy if interested.

My spring break was spent in rainy Atlanta doing a bit more Cherokee Printing History research. Filtered through records and books the Atlanta Historical Center and the Georgia State Archives in Morrow. On evening at the OK Café, I was able to meet up with alums who work in the city: Matt Grady, Ciara Cordasco, Jon & Sabrina Kay, and Karen Pearson.

Two more research days at the Western History Collection of the University of Oklahoma.

Three days of research in Eastern Oklahoma at the Cherokee Heritage Center, Northeastern State University, Tahlequah Public Library, the offices of the modern-day Cherokee Phoenix newspaper as well as Dwight Mission and Sequoyah's Cabin. Hey, look at these geese in the 100 degree heat on Oklahoma's Tenkiller Reservoir...

Thursday–May 03: UF Libraries are good too.

For whatever reason, UF has a good microfilm collection of antebellum period newspapers from Georgia. Including the Federal Union published in Milledgeville (at that time the capital city of the state), the Georgia Journal and the Southern Recorder. Conveniently, microfilm copies of the Cherokee Phoenix itself are also in the collection. UF databases also allow access to very useful online links to US Govt documents which often go into minute details about the removal activities in Cherokee North Georgia.

More sifting through archives. This time at the Pitts Theological Library at Emory University. Emory happens to have a useful set of microfilm of the Papers of the ABCFM. These reels are quite difficult to read (hand-written letters, poorly reproduced) but the only other option is to view the original materials at Harvard's Houghton Library.

Saturday–March 17: Georgia Archives

More research travel. This time three days the Georgia Archives just south of Atlanta. I discovered it is adjacent to the Southeastern branch of the National Archives. That's convenient. Also had burgers with UFGD alum Jon Kay.

Friday–February 02: Libraries of North Georgia

On a week-long research venture, I visited a handful of libraries in North Georgia. Two days at the Kenan Research Library at the Atlanta History Center. A look at the books in the special collections of the Catoosa and Gordon County Libraries. Also a stop at the small but specialized library at the New Echota State Historic Site.

As well, I made a visit to the Vann House and the Moravian cemetery at Springplace. The Moravians were influential in early educational efforts with Cherokee elites and the Vann House was the site of many dramatic events before and during removal.

Also, UFGD alum Jen Louis was nice enough to meet me at the IKEA store to talk shop and eat swedish meatballs.
